The Butchers' Bastion

The Butchers' Bastion is part of the defense system of Baia Mare, a system that consists of walls and seven towers built at the initiative of Matthias Corvinus. The Butchers' Bastion secured the South Gate of the fortress, one of the four gateways to enter the city. The Bastion was also called the Ammunition Bastion, because weapons and gunpowder were stored there in those times. The name "Butchers" comes from the fact that the butchers' guild used the bastion to defend the fortress against foreign attacks. The butchers' guild was the largest and strongest one among the guilds in Baia Mare. We invite you to discover this sight during our route.
