Károly Castle Carei

Karoly Castle is an assembly of historical monuments in Carei. The first known residence of the Károlyi family is dating back to the late 15th century. Karoly Castle in Carei was several times the venue where important diplomatic meetings took place in the 17th through 18th centuries. Among others, therein took place the negotiations for the drafting and signing of the Peace Treaty from Satu Mare of 1711. The castle in its actual form has been renovated and built between 1894 and 1896 at the initiative of Stefan Karolyi. During the interwar period, a part of the castle was converted into a sanatorium, and another part hosted a casino. During the Second World War, with the agreement of Károlyi family, there functioned here a military school, which was converted into a military hospital in 1944. Nowadays, the castle is a museum with historical interiors, which depict the castle yesteryear ambience, as well as an exhibition of local history.
