Gilau Roman Fort

Gilau Roman Fort was built to defend the Roman city Napoca, being the first camp in Transylvania where the archaeologists have identified the succession between the earth fort, wooden fort and stone fort. The Fort meant, during the Roman epoch, a fortified camp with a mainly defensive role. It measures 138 x 221 m and it was originally built of earth and wood under Traian Emperor. Siliana military unit, displaced here from Pannonia, increased the fort and reinforced it with stone works. Nowadays you can see the ruins of the camp reminding us of the days when it was functional.
