Maldaresti Cule

”Cule” represent the fortified houses of some countryside small boyars, built north of the Danube (Valcea, Mehedinti and Gorj counties). They are also found in Bulgaria, Serbia and Albania and were intended to defend their owners against the thieves and outlaws attacks. ”Cula” word comes from the Turkish kule (tower).  ”Cule” show the homogenity of a tower with 1 meter thick walls, situated in areas without vegetation and which are white painted. Greceanu”Cula” is the oldest construction of this type, documented in 1650.
