Ieud Wooden Church

The noble family Balea built the old Church on the Hill in Ieud at the beginning of the 17th century, being one century older than the wooden church in the lowland, located in the same village. The church dedicated to the “Nativity of the Virgin" represents an a apogee of the art in wooden church construction in Maramures. The value of this church also consists in the best quality painting, being the work of the famous local painter Alexander Ponehalschi. The mural painting covers everything inside the church, the altar, the nave, and the narthex is deemed to have been made in 1782 due to renovation realized by the Balea family. The church is since 1999 on the UNESCO Cultural Heritage list and we invite you to discover it during our trip in Maramures.
