Richis Fortified Church

The fortified Church in Richis village (commune Biertan) was built in the second half of 14th century. The church was originally a Cistercian Monastery then converted into a Catholic Church in 1400. The church has a polygonal choir in the north, an altar on the south side and the church body of three naves separated by octagonal pillars in the western part. The entrance is under the Bell Tower. Over the years, part of the old town walls no longer resisted. The Gate Tower still preserves nowadays the shooting holes at the first four floors. It is said that there once existed a clock in this tower. We can see many carved elements in this church. A number of grotesque figures confer the church a mysterious air. At the balcony behind the church there was installed an organ dating back to 1788; it was made by a famous organ builder of those times, Johann Prause. We invite you to discover together the beauty of this fortified church.
