Neamt Fortress

Neamt Fortress is located in Targu Neamt area and it was built in the late 16th century by Petru I. The economical development of Moldavia was one of the determining factors for its construction. The defense system of Moldavia, conceived by Petru I Musat, included at least three fortresses: Neamt, Suceava and Scheia, but his artisans have also built many monasteries and churches with fortified precincts. Among the legends of Neamt fortress are those in which 19 frontier guards heroically resisted the siege of Jan Sobieski, the Polish king. In the same Neamt fortress, the mother of Stefan cel Mare would have requested the Voivode not to look for refuge there, but return to fight.
