Merry Cemetery Sapanta

The Merry Cemetery is located in Sapanta village in Maramures region and it is famous for the tombs' colorful crosses, the naive paintings showing scenes from the lives of the buried people or even rhymes with humorous tones. The unique characteristic of this cemetery is its differentiation from popular culture, which considers the death as a sad event. There is also the assumption that Stan Ioan Patras (the founder of the cemetery) would have been inspired by the culture of Dacians, who apparently considered death a joyful event.
