Scarisoara Glacier

The largest underground glacier in Romania lies in Scarisoara Cave or Scarisoara Glacier. It is not known the exact date on which it was discovered, but the first mention of it dates back in 1847. The cave is part of the Ghetar - Ocoale - Dobresti karst system and it is made of limestone from the late Jurassic period, at an altitude of 1.165 m. Entrance into the cave entry is an impressive pit, whose opening has a diameter of 60 m. A narrow path carved into the rock and some metal stairs anchored on the walls facilitate the descending of the 48 m pit depth. A snow layer is kept on its bottom all around the year.
