Barsana Monastery

The Monastery “Synaxis of the 12 Holy Apostles" in Barsana is located near Sighetul Marmatiei. The Monastery is located on Iza Valley in the historical Maramures, its first testimonies dating back to 1390. The church is built of beams assembled in a "blockbau" system (technique of constructions made of horizontal beams) and it has a rectangular plan with two levels veranda on the west and retrieved polygonal apse of the altar. The monastic ensemble was built of wood and consists of a gateway specific to Maramures, the bell tower, the church (with a height of 57 m), the summer altar, the monks' cells, the chapel (built on several levels), the master’s house, the artists’ house (workshop).
